Management of Respiratory Symptoms in Infants

Age-Appropriate Interventions

  • For a 7-month-old infant with respiratory symptoms, adequate hydration to help thin secretions, humidification of room air to ease breathing, and nasal saline drops and gentle suction for nasal congestion are recommended 1
  • For fever or discomfort in infants, age-appropriate doses of acetaminophen or ibuprofen may be used, as suggested by the American Academy of Pediatrics 2

Indications for Medical Attention

  • If respiratory symptoms persist beyond 48-72 hours without improvement, medical attention should be sought 3
  • If fever is present, especially in infants under 3 months, medical evaluation is necessary 1
  • If there are signs of respiratory distress, such as rapid breathing, retractions, or cyanosis, immediate medical attention is required 3
  • If the infant shows decreased feeding or activity, medical assessment is recommended 3
