Initial Management of Nosebleeds in Von Willebrand Disease Patients

First-Line Management

  • The American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery recommends applying firm sustained compression to the lower third of the nose for 5 minutes or longer, with or without patient/caregiver assistance 1
  • If bleeding continues after initial compression, consider application of topical vasoconstrictors 1
  • For patients with suspected bleeding disorders like VWD, resorbable nasal packing should be used if packing becomes necessary 1, 2

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Avoid using non-resorbable packing in VWD patients as removal may trigger additional bleeding 1, 2
