Medications Associated with Leg Tremors
High-Risk Medications
- The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends against bupropion for restless legs syndrome due to its potential to worsen movement symptoms, with tremor occurring in 7-12% of patients in clinical trials 1, 2
- SSRIs, including fluoxetine, commonly cause sweating, tremors, nervousness, and various gastrointestinal disturbances 3
Medication-Specific Risks
- Gabapentin can cause tremor as a side effect, particularly at higher doses or in patients with renal impairment, despite being used to treat restless legs syndrome 2
- Ondansetron can cause myocardial ischemia through coronary vasospasm, potentially leading to tremor 4
Medications with Lower Risk of Tremor
- Losartan and other angiotensin receptor blockers are associated with drug-induced photosensitivity but not directly with tremor 5
- Finasteride, Rivaroxaban, Omeprazole, Lovastatin, Simethicone, Loperamide, Oxybutynin, and Docusate are not typically associated with tremor 3, 5, 6, 7
- Cetirizine, an antihistamine, can exacerbate restless legs syndrome but is not directly linked to tremor 2
