Itching as a Side Effect of Medications

Mechanism and Association

  • The mechanism of telmisartan-induced itching is likely related to the drug's effects on the renin-angiotensin system, which can influence inflammatory pathways in the skin 1
  • Meloxicam, as an oxicam NSAID, has a higher association with skin reactions including itching compared to other medications, with NSAIDs being common causes of delayed drug hypersensitivity reactions that can manifest as cutaneous reactions including pruritus 2
  • Oxicam NSAIDs, like meloxicam, have been more highly associated with severe cutaneous adverse drug reactions compared to other NSAID classes 2

Risk Factors and Management

  • Certain conditions may increase the risk of skin adverse events with these medications, including higher doses of the medications, dehydration, and salty food, sunburn, and skin contusions 3
  • Management of drug-induced itching includes topical therapies, systemic antihistamines, or short courses of systemic steroids for mild to moderate cases, and temporary interruption or dose reduction of the causative medication for severe cases 3
