Cefixima Dosage and Treatment Guidelines

Indications and Dosage

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends cefixima as an alternative treatment for uncomplicated gonococcal infections, with a dose of 400 mg orally in a single dose, followed by a test of cure in 1 week 2, 3
  • For the treatment of gonococcal infections, when cefixima is used, it should be combined with azithromycin 1 g orally in a single dose or doxycycline 100 mg orally twice a day for 7 days, with azithromycin preferred as the second antimicrobial due to its advantages in compliance and higher prevalence of gonococcal resistance to tetracyclines 2, 3

Warnings and Precautions

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention no longer recommends cefixima as a first-line regimen for the treatment of gonorrhea in the United States due to increased resistance 2, 3
