Epiduo Composition and Treatment

Introduction to Epiduo

  • The American Academy of Dermatology recommends Epiduo, a topical combination medication containing adapalene 0.1% and benzoyl peroxide 2.5%, for the treatment of acne vulgaris in patients 9 years and older 1
  • Adapalene is a topical retinoid that selectively binds to retinoic acid receptors beta and gamma, conferring comedolytic, anti-inflammatory, and microcomedone-resolving properties 3, 4

Safety and Efficacy

  • The peroxide component of Epiduo has antibacterial properties and helps prevent bacterial resistance when used in combination with antibiotics 5
  • The combination of adapalene 0.1% and benzoyl peroxide 2.5% is well-tolerated, with common adverse effects including erythema, desquamation, dryness, and burning sensation, typically of mild to moderate intensity 4

Indications and Usage

  • Epiduo is indicated for the topical treatment of acne vulgaris, applied once daily to affected areas of the face or trunk after washing, with a recommended amount of a pea-sized amount for each facial area 1

Precautions and Contraindications

  • Epiduo is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to adapalene or any component of the formulation, and patients should minimize sun exposure during use 1
