Racecadotril Dosing Guidelines

Adult Dosing

  • The standard dose of racecadotril for adults is 100 mg orally three times daily, used as adjunctive therapy to oral rehydration for acute diarrhea, as recommended by the European Society for Medical Oncology 1, 2
  • Racecadotril is indicated for Grade 1 immunotherapy-induced diarrhea in cancer patients as symptomatic treatment, according to the European Society for Medical Oncology 1, 2

Special Populations

  • For cancer patients with immunotherapy-induced diarrhea, racecadotril is an option for Grade 1 diarrhea alongside loperamide, combined with oral rehydration, as suggested by the European Society for Medical Oncology 1, 2
  • The American Society of Clinical Oncology notes that prophylactic use of racecadotril (100 mg three times daily for 15 days) during chemotherapy failed to demonstrate benefit in preventing diarrhea 6

Availability and Limitations

  • The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention should be aware that racecadotril is not available in North America, limiting its practical utility in the United States and Canada 3, 4, 5
