Weight Bearing After Calcaneal Hardware Removal, Subtalar Arthrodesis, and Tarsal Tunnel Release

Postoperative Care

  • During the initial non-weight bearing phase, elevate the foot when possible to minimize swelling and apply cryotherapy during the first postoperative week to reduce pain and inflammation, as recommended by Praxis Medical Insights 1
  • The walking boot should provide rigid support to protect the arthrodesis while allowing functional recovery, as suggested by Praxis Medical Insights 1
  • Once adequate fusion is demonstrated radiographically, transition out of the boot into supportive footwear, as recommended by Praxis Medical Insights 1
  • Assess for pain, swelling, or warmth that would indicate premature loading, according to the British Journal of Sports Medicine 2
