Management of Hyperkalemia: Monitoring and Medication Adjustments

Continuous Monitoring of Serum Potassium

  • Regularly assess the risk of recurrent hyperkalemia at every clinical visit, involving all members of the care team—including dietitians—to ensure timely identification of patients at risk. 1
  • Perform periodic serum potassium measurements, especially when initiating or modifying a dietary regimen, to detect early changes in potassium levels. 1

Medication‑Related Precautions

  • When clinically feasible, discontinue or avoid potassium‑sparing diuretics and renin‑angiotensin‑aldosterone system (RAAS) inhibitors, as these agents increase the likelihood of hyperkalemia. 2
  • Prior to implementing major dietary changes, coordinate with the patient’s treating physician, particularly for individuals receiving the above medications, to balance dietary goals with medication safety. 1
