Nutritional Support in Patients with Hypoalbuminemia and Lymphoma

Primary Indication and Safety Profile

  • The primary goal is to treat the underlying cause of hypoalbuminemia (the lymphoma and its treatment) while providing adequate nutritional support 1

Specific Considerations for This Patient Population

  • Focus on treating the underlying lymphoma rather than attempting to correct albumin levels with albumin infusion alone 1
  • Provide adequate protein intake of 1.2-1.3 g/kg body weight per day through the amino acid solution, combined with sufficient caloric intake (30-35 kcal/kg/day) 1
  • Hypoalbuminemia in lymphoma patients often reflects disease-associated catabolism and inflammation rather than pure malnutrition 1

Lymphoma-Specific Considerations

  • Patients with lymphoma receiving chemotherapy should have tumor response assessed before considering additional interventions for anemia or nutritional support 2, 3
  • Monitor for increased risk of thromboembolic complications, which is elevated in lymphoma patients, particularly when receiving chemotherapy 2, 3

Monitoring Requirements

  • Monitor serum albumin regularly (at least every 4 months) to assess response to nutritional support and disease treatment 1

Expected Outcomes

  • Hypoalbuminemia should improve as the underlying lymphoma responds to treatment and inflammation decreases 1
  • Target serum albumin ≥4.0 g/dL (using bromcresol green method) as the outcome goal once the underlying disease is controlled 1
