IV Diazepam Administration for Muscle Relaxation

Monitoring and Safety Considerations

  • The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends monitoring for respiratory depression, especially when combined with other sedative agents, and being prepared to provide respiratory support and monitor oxygen saturation 1
  • The administration of IV diazepam requires careful consideration of the risk of respiratory depression, and flumazenil may be administered to reverse life-threatening respiratory depression, though it will also counteract the muscle relaxant effects 1
  • Rapid administration of IV diazepam can cause pain at injection site, hypotension, and increased risk of respiratory depression, and should be avoided 1
  • The use of IV diazepam in combination with other sedative agents increases the risk of apnea, and paradoxical excitement or agitation may occur, especially in younger patients 1
