Salbutamol Dosage and Administration
Introduction to Salbutamol Dosage
- The dosing of salbutamol should be adjusted based on clinical response and tolerance, as recommended by the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology 1
Pediatric and Adult Dosing
- For children weighing ≥15 kg, the oral tablet dose is typically 0.1 mg/kg per dose, maximum 2 mg per dose, 3-4 times daily, as suggested by the American Academy of Pediatrics 1
- Half doses should be used in very young children when using nebulized therapy, according to the British Thoracic Society 2, 3
Acute Severe Asthma Management
- Adults with acute severe asthma should receive 5 mg salbutamol via oxygen-driven nebulizer, which can be repeated every 15-30 minutes if not improving, as recommended by the British Thoracic Society 2, 3, 4
- Children with acute severe asthma should receive 5 mg salbutamol (or 0.15 mg/kg) via oxygen-driven nebulizer, with half doses in very young children, as suggested by the British Thoracic Society 2, 3, 5
Escalation of Therapy
- If symptoms persist despite appropriate dosing, systemic corticosteroids (prednisolone 30-60 mg for adults, 1-2 mg/kg for children with maximum 40 mg) should be added, as recommended by the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology and the British Thoracic Society 1, 2, 3
- Ipratropium bromide 0.5 mg (adults) or 100-250 mcg (children) can be added to the nebulizer if not improving after 15-30 minutes, as suggested by the British Thoracic Society 2, 3
