Keloid Management: Treatment Options

First-Line Treatments

  • Triamcinolone acetonide (10-40 mg/mL) is the most commonly used corticosteroid for keloid treatment, with higher concentrations (40 mg/mL) recommended for hypertrophic scars and keloids, as per the American Academy of Dermatology 1
  • The American Academy of Dermatology recommends monitoring for local adverse effects of corticosteroids, including atrophy, pigmentary changes, telangiectasias, and hypertrichosis, as well as assessing for systemic absorption with repeated injections 1

Special Considerations

  • Individuals with personal or family history of keloids should be cautioned about any procedures that cause skin trauma, and prevention is the best strategy for those with known keloid tendency, according to the Pediatrics guideline 2, 3
  • The Pediatrics guideline also advises watching for infections, which can be treated with standard topical or systemic antibiotics 3
