Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics of Bisoprolol

Introduction to Bisoprolol

  • The American Heart Association notes that bisoprolol has a bioavailability of approximately 80% after oral administration, with a protein binding of about 30% and a volume of distribution of 2.0-3.0 L/kg 1

Pharmacokinetic Properties

  • The European Society of Cardiology states that the elimination half-life of bisoprolol is 9-12 hours, with approximately 50% of the dose excreted unchanged in the urine 1
  • The renal clearance of bisoprolol is around 200-250 mL/min in patients with normal renal function, with a significant portion of the dose also eliminated through non-renal pathways 1

Special Population Considerations

  • The National Kidney Foundation indicates that in patients with renal impairment, the plasma half-life of bisoprolol increases approximately threefold compared to healthy subjects 1
