Typical Foley Catheter Size for Adults

Foley Catheter Size Selection Guidelines

  • The typical size of a Foley catheter for adults is 14-16 French (Fr), with 16 Fr being the most commonly used standard size for routine catheterization, according to the American Urological Association 1
  • For urethral catheter drainage following bladder injury repair, standard sizing (14-16 Fr) is sufficient without need for suprapubic catheterization, as recommended by the American Urological Association 1
  • When performing retrograde urethrography, a 12 Fr Foley catheter is recommended for contrast administration, as suggested by the American Urological Association 1

Clinical Considerations for Size Selection

  • Patient anatomy and condition (gender, age, urethral strictures), purpose of catheterization (short vs. long-term), and duration of anticipated use are factors that affect size choice, according to the American Society of Anesthesiologists 2
  • The smallest appropriate catheter size should be selected to minimize trauma while maintaining adequate drainage, as recommended by the American Society of Anesthesiologists 2
  • Oversized catheters (>18 Fr) increase the risk of patient discomfort, as noted by the American Society of Anesthesiologists 2

Practical Recommendations

  • For routine adult catheterization, starting with a 16 Fr catheter is recommended, according to the American Urological Association 1

Pediatric Considerations

  • Neonatal long lines down to 28G are available for specialized use, as noted by the American Academy of Pediatrics 2
  • Non-tunneled 4.5 Fr triple-lumen CVCs are available for neonates, as reported by the American Academy of Pediatrics 2
  • Tunneled Broviac catheters for long-term use are available down to 2.7 Fr, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics 2
