Frostbite Diagnosis and Management

Definition and Pathophysiology

  • Frostbite is characterized by actual tissue freezing leading to necrosis; appropriate management requires prompt rewarming of the affected area to 37‑40 °C according to established protocols. 1

Differentiation from Chilblains

  • Unlike chilblains, which arise from non‑freezing cold exposure, frostbite involves true freezing of tissue and presents with more severe injury, necessitating distinct clinical recognition and treatment. 1
