Pre-TEP Scan Activity Guidelines
Introduction to Pre-TEP Scan Activities
- The American Cancer Society recommends that patients avoid moderate to vigorous physical activity for 24 hours before a TEP scan, as exercise increases muscle uptake of the FDG tracer and may create false positives or mask real lesions 1, 2
Activities to Avoid
- Strenuous exercises such as jogging, cycling, swimming, and aerobics should be avoided 24 hours before the TEP scan, as they increase muscle uptake of the FDG tracer 1, 2
- Competitive sports like soccer, hockey, and tennis should be avoided 24 hours before the TEP scan, as they increase muscle uptake of the FDG tracer 1, 2
- Physically demanding work such as forestry, construction, and firefighting should be avoided 24 hours before the TEP scan, as they increase muscle uptake of the FDG tracer 1, 2
- Resistance exercises such as weightlifting and strength training should be avoided 24 hours before the TEP scan, as they increase muscle uptake of the FDG tracer 3
Permitted Activities
- Light daily activities such as short walks, gentle stretching, and breathing exercises are permitted the day before the TEP scan 5, 6
- Relative rest is recommended, with patients encouraged to prioritize sedentary activities and avoid strenuous exercise 1
Additional Considerations
- Patients should avoid prolonged standing and excessive movement the day before the TEP scan 6
- Patients should not underestimate the impact of "light" activities, as even moderate walking can increase muscle uptake of the FDG tracer 1
- Patients should avoid physical stress, including lifting or manipulating objects, even if they are light 5
