Rheumatoid Arthritis Management with Biologic Therapy

Patient Selection for Biologic Therapy

  • The American College of Rheumatology recommends biologic therapy like abatacept (Orencia) for patients with moderate to severely active rheumatoid arthritis 1, 3
  • Treatment should be intensified in patients with an SDAI score higher than 11 (CDAI >10), which indicates moderate disease activity 1, 3

Treatment Response Assessment

  • The European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) recommends ongoing biologic therapy for patients with persistent moderate to high disease activity 2, 4
  • Continuation of biologic therapy requires evidence of ongoing moderate to severe disease activity or clear documentation of treatment response 2

Disease Activity Monitoring

  • Regular monitoring of disease activity using standardized measures (joint counts, inflammatory markers) should continue 2, 4
  • Document any changes in disease activity that might warrant reconsideration of biologic therapy in the future 2
