Effective Treatment for Influenza

Introduction to Oseltamivir

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends oseltamivir as the most effective etiotropic drug for treating influenza, which clinically corresponds to the flu, in patients with symptoms such as high fever, chills, headache, muscle and joint pain, and cough 1, 2

Clinical Presentation and Diagnosis

  • Symptoms such as high fever, chills, headache, muscle and joint pain, and cough, in combination with objective data, are typical for influenza infection in patients with flu-like symptoms 3, 4
  • The absence of liver and spleen enlargement, as well as meningeal symptoms, helps to differentiate this condition from other infectious diseases in patients with similar symptoms 1, 5

Rationale for Oseltamivir Choice

  • Oseltamivir is effective against influenza A and B viruses, while amantadine and rimantadine are only effective against influenza A, making oseltamivir a better choice for patients with flu-like symptoms 3, 4, 1
  • Oseltamivir reduces the duration of the disease by approximately 1-1.5 days and decreases the severity of symptoms when administered within 36-48 hours of symptom onset in patients with influenza 2
  • The drug reduces the frequency of secondary complications requiring antibiotic treatment in patients with influenza 6

Comparison with Other Drugs

  • Oseltamivir, an influenza neuraminidase inhibitor, is effective against influenza A and B viruses, making it a better choice for patients with flu-like symptoms 1, 2
  • Ribavirin has a broad spectrum of antiviral activity but is not a first-line treatment for influenza and has more pronounced side effects, making oseltamivir a better choice for patients with flu-like symptoms 7

Recommendations for Oseltamivir Use

  • The recommended dose for adults and adolescents over 13 years old is 75 mg twice a day for 5 days, which is effective in reducing the duration and severity of influenza symptoms 1, 2
  • Treatment should be started as early as possible from the onset of symptoms, ideally within the first 48 hours, to maximize the effectiveness of oseltamivir in patients with influenza 9
