HPV Vaccination Guidelines for Adult Males
Standard Age Recommendations
- The American College of Physicians and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommend HPV vaccination for males aged 13-21 years as routine catch-up vaccination if not previously vaccinated 1, 2, 3
- The ACIP recommends HPV4 vaccination for males aged 22-26 years, although this is a permissive recommendation rather than a routine one 1, 2, 3
- There is no routine recommendation for HPV vaccination in males over 26 years, according to ACIP guidelines from 2007-2014 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Special Populations
- The ACIP specifically recommends HPV4 vaccination for men who have sex with men (MSM) through age 26 years, as they may especially benefit from protection against condyloma and anal cancer 1, 2, 3
- The ACIP recommends HPV vaccination for immunocompromised persons, including those with HIV infection, through age 26 years if not previously vaccinated 1, 2, 3
Important Caveats
- Vaccination should ideally occur before potential HPV exposure through sexual activity, although sexually active individuals can still be vaccinated 1, 2, 3, 5, 7
- A history of genital warts, abnormal testing, or positive HPV DNA does not preclude vaccination, as individuals may not have been infected with all vaccine HPV types 5, 8, 7
