Management of Reducible Inguinal Hernia in Elderly Female
Rationale for Surgical Intervention
- Elective surgical repair is recommended for an elderly female with a reducible inguinal hernia causing slight discomfort to prevent life-threatening complications such as incarceration and strangulation, which would necessitate emergency surgery with significantly higher mortality risk, as recommended by the American College of Surgeons 1
Surgical Approach Selection
- The patient should be medically optimized prior to elective surgery to minimize perioperative risk, with laparoscopic repair being the preferred approach, offering superior outcomes, including an excellent safety profile with very low in-hospital mortality 1
Critical Warning Signs Requiring Emergency Intervention
- The patient must be educated to seek immediate surgical attention if signs of incarceration, such as a hernia becoming irreducible, painful, or associated with obstipation, develop, requiring emergency repair to be performed immediately 1
- The patient must also seek immediate surgical attention if signs of strangulation, such as severe pain, purple/black discoloration, or systemic symptoms, develop, as recommended by the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons 2
