Alcohol Consumption and ALT Levels

Effects of Alcohol on Liver Enzymes

  • ALT is less sensitive to acute alcohol consumption than other liver enzymes like AST and GGT, which are more responsive markers, according to the Clinical and Molecular Hepatology and Journal of Hepatology 1, 2
  • In established alcoholic liver disease, AST elevation is typically more prominent than ALT elevation, with AST/ALT ratios usually exceeding 2:1, as reported by Clinical and Molecular Hepatology and Journal of Hepatology 1, 2, 3
  • GGT is the most sensitive marker for detecting recent alcohol consumption, elevated in approximately 75% of habitual drinkers, according to Clinical and Molecular Hepatology 1, 3

Recommendations for Bloodwork

  • Abstain from alcohol for at least 24-48 hours before liver function testing to obtain the most accurate baseline values, particularly if you have any risk factors for liver disease, as advised by Clinical and Molecular Hepatology 1

Interaction with Other Risk Factors

  • The presence of other liver disease risk factors, such as obesity, diabetes, and viral hepatitis, should be assessed, as they can interact with alcohol's effects, according to Hepatology 4, 5
