Azithromycin Safety in Liver Disease

Introduction to Azithromycin Use in Liver Disease

  • The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that azithromycin should be used with extreme caution in patients with liver disease, particularly those with a history of cholestatic jaundice or hepatic dysfunction from prior azithromycin use, due to the risk of severe hepatotoxicity 1, 2

Absolute Contraindications

  • A history of cholestatic jaundice or hepatic dysfunction associated with previous azithromycin use is an absolute contraindication, based on the risk of recurrent and potentially more severe hepatotoxicity upon re-exposure 1, 2
  • The American Academy of Dermatology advises against rechallenging patients who have experienced prior azithromycin-related hepatotoxicity, as this is an absolute contraindication 1, 2
