Treatment of Trachyonychia

Primary Treatment Approach

  • Mid to high-potency topical corticosteroid ointment applied twice daily to nail folds can reduce inflammation when there is evidence of nail fold involvement or matrix inflammation, as recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology 1

Important Clinical Pitfalls

  • Trachyonychia should not be confused with onychomycosis or paronychia, which require entirely different treatment approaches with antifungals or antibiotics, according to the British Association of Dermatologists and the European Society for Medical Oncology 2, 3
