Exercise and Bilirubin Levels

Effects of Exercise on Bilirubin

  • High-intensity exercise can cause transient elevations in blood glucose and catecholamines, which can persist for 1-2 hours after exercise, in individuals with diabetes, as recommended by the American Diabetes Association 1, 2
  • Regular exercise may contribute to maintaining optimal bilirubin levels, with potential beneficial effects on cardiovascular health, as suggested by the American Heart Association, although the exact relationship between exercise and bilirubin levels is still being researched 3, 4

Clinical Implications

  • The American College of Sports Medicine recommends that individuals with diabetes do not need to postpone exercise due to high blood glucose levels, as long as they feel well and are adequately hydrated, with consideration of the potential effects of exercise on bilirubin levels 3, 4
