Isopropyl Alcohol for Nausea Management

Guideline Recommendations

  • The National Comprehensive Cancer Network recommends dopamine receptor antagonists as first-line therapy for non-specific nausea, followed by 5-HT3 receptor antagonists for persistent symptoms 1
  • For chemotherapy-related nausea, guidelines recommend risk-stratified prophylaxis with combination therapy (5-HT3 antagonist + dexamethasone for moderate risk; adding NK1 antagonist for high risk) 2, 3

Clinical Considerations

  • IPA should not replace evaluation for underlying causes of nausea (gastric outlet obstruction, bowel obstruction, metabolic abnormalities, medication effects) 4, 1
  • IPA is not a substitute for guideline-directed antiemetic prophylaxis in patients receiving emetogenic chemotherapy or radiation therapy 2, 3, 1

Patient Assessment and Monitoring

  • Routine screening for nausea at every outpatient visit remains essential, with reassessment within 1 month if symptoms persist 2, 1
