Adverse Effects of Rosuvastatin

Contrast with Other Medications

  • Sleep medications like eszopiclone can cause unpleasant taste in 7-26% of patients, according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine 1
  • The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and other guideline societies note that nasal sprays such as azelastine and olopatadine commonly cause bitter taste in 19.7% and 12.8% of patients, respectively 2
  • Acetazolamide causes dysgeusia in approximately 1 in 18 patients, as reported by medical guideline societies 3

Clinical Implications

  • Viral infections, particularly COVID-19, can cause taste/smell loss in 59-86% of cases, and should be considered as an alternative cause of taste loss in patients taking rosuvastatin 4
  • Other medications the patient may be taking concurrently, as well as underlying medical conditions affecting taste perception, should be investigated as potential causes of taste loss in patients taking rosuvastatin 2, 4

Rosuvastatin and Taste Disturbances

Adverse Effects of Rosuvastatin

  • The American College of Cardiology and other guideline societies acknowledge that rosuvastatin's documented side effects include myalgia, elevated liver enzymes, and a small increased risk of diabetes, but taste disorders are notably absent from these safety profiles 5, 6

Alternative Causes of Taste Loss

  • Viral infections, particularly COVID-19, can cause taste/smell loss in 59-86% of cases and should be considered as a primary cause of taste disturbance 7

Clinical Guidance

  • The American Heart Association recommends that healthcare providers should not discontinue rosuvastatin based solely on taste complaints without investigating more probable causes, as the cardiovascular benefits of statin therapy far outweigh unsubstantiated concerns about taste disturbance 5, 6
