Treatment of Gastritis with Famotidine
Clinical Considerations
- Tachyphylaxis develops within 6 weeks of continuous H2-receptor antagonist therapy, requiring periodic reassessment of continued need 1
- The American Gastroenterological Association suggests that long-term famotidine does not worsen corpus gastritis in peptic ulcer patients, in contrast to concerns about PPIs worsening corpus-predominant gastritis in H. pylori-positive patients 2
Patient Selection
- Famotidine is most appropriate for patients with mild to moderate symptomatic gastritis requiring acid suppression, who cannot tolerate or prefer to avoid PPIs, or who require short-term symptom relief, according to Praxis Medical Insights 1
- Patients on dual antiplatelet therapy may benefit from famotidine as it does not interfere with clopidogrel activity 1
