Preoperative Imaging for Severe Scoliosis with Respiratory Compromise

Radiographic Assessment

  • Full‑spine posterior‑anterior and lateral radiographs are required to measure the Cobb angle and evaluate curve flexibility using side‑bending, push‑prone, or traction techniques, as recommended by the American College of Radiology. 1

Computed Tomography (CT)

  • Pre‑operative CT of the spine aids surgical planning by visualizing bony malformations and reduces pedicle‑screw misplacement rates from 15.3 % to 6.5 %, according to American College of Radiology evidence. 2

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

  • Comprehensive spinal MRI is indicated to exclude intraspinal anomalies (e.g., Chiari I malformation, syrinx, tethered cord) that could alter the operative strategy, as advised by the American College of Radiology. 3
