Glucagonoma Syndrome

Clinical Manifestations

  • The classic symptoms of glucagonoma include necrolytic migratory erythema, diabetes mellitus, weight loss, stomatitis, and diarrhea, as recommended by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network 1, 2
  • Hyperglycemia results from the glucagon excess antagonizing insulin action, according to the American Diabetes Association 3

Diagnostic Evaluation

  • In patients presenting with persistent necrolytic migratory erythema, especially when associated with diabetes mellitus, weight loss, or stomatitis, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network recommends measuring plasma glucagon levels and performing abdominal imaging (multiphasic CT or MRI) 2
