Concurrent Use of Adderall and Progesterone

Introduction to Concurrent Use

  • The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists suggests that Adderall and progesterone can be taken concurrently, as there are no documented significant drug interactions between these medications 1, 2, 3

Medication Administration

  • Adderall XR is typically started at 10 mg once daily in the morning for adults with ADHD, with dose titration occurring in 5 mg weekly increments up to a maximum of 50 mg daily, as recommended by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry 1, 3
  • The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends that Adderall should be administered in the morning to minimize sleep disturbances 3

Safety and Efficacy

  • The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists states that Adderall does not appear to be associated with major congenital malformations or significant adverse developmental outcomes when used therapeutically 1
  • Monitoring for side effects such as irritability, insomnia, and cardiovascular effects is recommended when taking Adderall, according to the American Heart Association 1

Progesterone Use

  • The Endocrine Society recommends progesterone for hormone replacement therapy for conditions such as premature ovarian insufficiency 4
  • Micronized progesterone is often the first choice among progestins due to its lower risk of cardiovascular disease and venous thromboembolism compared to synthetic progestins, as suggested by the American College of Cardiology 4

Interaction and Monitoring

  • There is no evidence in the clinical guidelines suggesting contraindications or significant interactions between Adderall and progesterone, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Endocrine Society 1, 4, 2, 3
  • The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry recommends monitoring for changes in blood pressure and heart rate, as Adderall can cause cardiovascular effects 3
  • The American Psychiatric Association suggests monitoring for mood changes, as both medications can affect mood 1, 4
