Pyelocele and Related Conditions

Definition and Diagnosis

  • The American College of Radiology recommends cystocolpoproctography (CCP) for detecting pelvic floor abnormalities, including enteroceles, sigmoidoceles, and rectoanal intussusceptions, with a sensitivity of approximately 83% for peritoneocele detection 1, 3
  • The American College of Radiology suggests that MR Defecography provides high soft-tissue contrast resolution for direct visualization of pelvic organs and floor muscles 5, 6
  • A herniation of the posterior vaginal wall, known as posterior colopocele, can be detected during CCP 1, 2
  • A herniation of the peritoneal sac, known as peritoneocele, can be detected through imaging studies such as CCP 1, 3
  • The American College of Radiology recognizes ureterocele as a condition involving cystic dilation of the distal ureter 4

Imaging Modalities

  • Cystocolpoproctography (CCP) is a recommended fluoroscopic technique for detecting various pelvic floor abnormalities, including enteroceles, sigmoidoceles, and rectoanal intussusceptions 1, 3
  • MR Defecography is recommended for providing high soft-tissue contrast resolution for direct visualization of pelvic organs and floor muscles 5, 6
