Treatment of Acne with Doxycycline

Introduction to Doxycycline Treatment

  • The American Academy of Dermatology recommends doxycycline as a first-line treatment for moderate to severe acne 1

Interactions with Doxycycline

  • Foods and beverages containing calcium, iron, magnesium, aluminum, and other minerals can form complexes with doxycycline, significantly reducing its absorption 3
  • Caffeine can interfere with doxycycline absorption, and it is recommended to separate their consumption by at least 1-2 hours 3
  • Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) can form chelates with doxycycline, decreasing its bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy 3

Administration Guidelines

  • Doxycycline should be taken with a full glass of water to minimize the risk of esophageal irritation 3
  • Doxycycline should be administered at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after consuming caffeine, vitamin C supplements, dairy products, or other mineral-rich foods 3

Considerations for Acne Treatment

  • Doxycycline is indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe acne and inflammatory forms resistant to topical treatments 1
  • The use of systemic antibiotics like doxycycline should be limited to 3-4 months to minimize the development of bacterial resistance 1
  • Doxycycline should be used in combination with topical therapy (benzoyl peroxide and/or retinoids) to optimize results and reduce antibiotic resistance 1

Transition to Maintenance Therapy

  • After completing doxycycline treatment, it is recommended to transition to a maintenance topical therapy with a combination of benzoyl peroxide and retinoid 1
  • Maintenance therapy is essential to prevent relapses and maintain the results obtained with antibiotic treatment 1
