Treatment of Group B Streptococcus Urinary Tract Infection After Failed Augmentin

Antibiotic Selection

  • Vancomycin may be considered for severe infections or in patients with significant beta-lactam allergies, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 1, 2
  • Clindamycin may be used if the GBS isolate is confirmed susceptible through antimicrobial susceptibility testing, according to the CDC 1

Special Considerations

  • For pregnant patients, fluoroquinolones should be avoided, and penicillin G, ampicillin, or cefazolin remain the preferred agents for GBS in pregnancy, as recommended by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) 1, 3, 4, 5
  • The CDC recommends consulting with an obstetrician for appropriate antibiotic selection in pregnant patients 1, 3
