Tetracycline Contraindications and Precautions

Contraindications and Adverse Effects

  • Tetracyclines are contraindicated during pregnancy, for nursing women, and for patients with hypersensitivity to tetracyclines, as recommended by the American Academy of Ophthalmology 1
  • Tetracyclines should not be used in children under 8 years of age due to the risk of permanent teeth staining, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology 1
  • Tetracyclines can cause photosensitization, gastrointestinal upset, and rarely, more serious adverse effects, as reported by the American Academy of Ophthalmology 1
  • Tetracyclines may decrease the effectiveness of oral contraceptives and potentiate the effect of warfarin, as noted by the American Academy of Ophthalmology 1
