Naproxen Dosage and Safety Guidelines

Dosing Recommendations

  • The American Academy of Family Physicians recommends a maximum dose of 1,500 mg per day for migraine treatment, with dosing of 275-550 mg every 2-6 hours, and a maximum initial dose of 825 mg 1

Safety Considerations

  • The American Geriatrics Society recommends mandatory monitoring, including gastrointestinal protection with proton pump inhibitor or misoprostol, and routine assessment for gastrointestinal toxicity, renal function, hypertension, and heart failure 2
  • The American Geriatrics Society advises against combining naproxen with other NSAIDs, as this increases adverse effects without additional benefit, and against using ibuprofen concurrently with aspirin for cardioprophylaxis, as it interferes with aspirin's antiplatelet effect 2
  • It is essential to account for "hidden sources" of NSAIDs in combination products when calculating total daily dose, to avoid exceeding the recommended maximum daily dose 2
