Management of Scalp Masses

Determining the Appropriate Surgeon

  • Deep scalp masses involving or adjacent to the skull require neurosurgeons, particularly for masses with potential intracranial extension, as recommended by the British journal of neurosurgery 1
  • Skull base surgeons are necessary for complex cases near the base of the skull, according to the World of Neurosurgery 2
  • Skull base tumors require specialized skull base surgeons, often with a multidisciplinary team, as stated by the World of Neurosurgery and Neuro-Oncology 2, 3

Surgical Approaches and Considerations

  • For deep masses involving skull, more extensive preoperative imaging and potential skull reconstruction may be required, as suggested by the Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network 4
  • En bloc resection is preferred when feasible for deep masses involving skull, according to the Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network 5

Special Considerations

  • Vascular lesions of the scalp may require preoperative embolization to reduce bleeding risk, as recommended by the British journal of neurosurgery 1
  • Excessive blood loss is a potential complication, particularly with vascular lesions or large tumors, as noted by the British journal of neurosurgery 1
