Testing and Management Recommendations for Mycoplasma genitalium Exposure

Diagnostic Timing After Exposure

  • For individuals exposed to Mycoplasma genitalium, a diagnostic test performed two weeks after the exposure is sufficient to detect infection; this contrasts with test‑of‑cure testing, which should be delayed 3–4 weeks after treatment to avoid false‑positive results from non‑viable organisms. 1

Partner Evaluation and Treatment

  • When a sexual partner of an exposed individual tests positive for M. genitalium, the partner should be evaluated and treated promptly, because untreated partners are the main source of reinfection. 1

Sexual Activity Guidance During Treatment

  • Both the patient and the treated partner should abstain from sexual activity until they have completed the full antimicrobial regimen and any symptoms have resolved, to prevent ongoing transmission and reinfection. [2][3]
