Itraconazole Dosing for Tinea Corporis

Evidence-Based Dosing Regimen

  • For tinea corporis, itraconazole should be administered at 100 mg once daily for 15 days, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics 1, 2

Administration Considerations

  • The capsule formulation of itraconazole should be taken with food for optimal absorption, as recommended by the Praxis Medical Insights guideline society 3
  • Concomitant use of H2 blockers, proton pump inhibitors, phenytoin, or rifampicin should be avoided, as they decrease itraconazole efficacy, according to the British Association of Dermatologists 8, 3

Treatment Failure Management

  • If no clinical improvement occurs after completing the 15-day course, alternative agents such as terbinafine 250 mg daily or topical terbinafine 1% cream may be considered, as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Praxis Medical Insights guideline society 1, 3

Special Considerations for Severe Infections

  • Twice daily dosing (200 mg BD) is reserved for more severe or invasive infections, such as osteoarticular sporotrichosis, pulmonary sporotrichosis, and treatment failures in cutaneous sporotrichosis, according to the Infectious Diseases Society of America 4, 5, 6, 7
