Doxycycline Formulations for Skin Infections

Efficacy and Recommendations

  • The Infectious Diseases Society of America recommends doxycycline (both formulations) as an effective treatment option for skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs), particularly for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections 1, 2, 3
  • The standard dosage for skin infections is 100 mg twice daily regardless of formulation, as recommended by the Clinical Infectious Diseases guidelines 1, 2, 3
  • Both formulations have identical antimicrobial activity against common skin pathogens including Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus species, according to the World Journal of Emergency Surgery 3, 4

Special Considerations

  • The American Academy of Pediatrics states that doxycycline is contraindicated in children under 8 years of age due to risk of dental staining 1, 5
  • For skin infections where MRSA is suspected, doxycycline (either formulation) is an appropriate oral option, as recommended by the Clinical Infectious Diseases guidelines 3, 4
  • When treating streptococcal skin infections, some guidelines recommend combining doxycycline with a beta-lactam antibiotic for more complete coverage, according to the Clinical Infectious Diseases journal 4, 6

Treatment Duration

  • The World Journal of Emergency Surgery recommends 7-14 days of therapy for most uncomplicated skin infections 4
  • The Clinical Infectious Diseases journal states that duration should be based on clinical response, with resolution of erythema, warmth, and induration indicating successful treatment 6
