Losartan Therapy for Hypertension

Clinical Outcomes and Benefits

  • The American College of Cardiology recommends losartan for patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy, as it demonstrated a lower risk for cardiovascular endpoints and all-cause mortality compared to atenolol in the LIFE study 1, 2

Combination Therapy and Monitoring

  • The American Heart Association suggests that if blood pressure goals are not achieved with losartan monotherapy, additional antihypertensive medications may be added, and blood pressure should be monitored regularly to assess response to therapy 3

Special Population Considerations and Monitoring

  • The National Kidney Foundation recommends monitoring of renal function and proteinuria in patients with diabetes and nephropathy, and target blood pressure should be <130/80 mmHg for patients with diabetes or chronic kidney disease 3, 4, 5, 6
