Management of Lithium Toxicity

Monitoring and Prevention

  • Obtain serial serum lithium levels to track elimination, and monitor renal function tests frequently during treatment, as recommended by clinical guidelines 1
  • Regular monitoring of serum lithium concentrations is essential, especially during acute treatment phases, to prevent recurrence of lithium toxicity 2
  • Educate patients and caregivers about early signs of lithium toxicity, such as tremor, nausea, diarrhea, and polyuria-polydipsia, to facilitate prompt intervention 1, 2

Special Considerations

  • Lithium should be discontinued during ECT treatment if clinically possible, as concurrent use has been associated with acute brain syndrome, according to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry 3
