Ondansetron Dosing in Hemodialysis Patients

Pharmacokinetics and Dosing

  • Ondansetron does not require post-dialysis dosing adjustments, unlike medications such as pyrazinamide, ethambutol, or aminoglycosides, as it is not significantly removed by hemodialysis, similar to other highly protein-bound, hepatically metabolized medications 1
  • The American Thoracic Society recommends that ondansetron can be administered without dose adjustment in hemodialysis patients, as it is primarily metabolized by the liver and not significantly removed by dialysis 2

Medication Characteristics

  • Ondansetron is not significantly removed by hemodialysis, due to its high protein binding and hepatic metabolism 1
