Medical Necessity of Omalizumab for Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria

Safety Considerations

  • Omalizumab carries a small risk (0.2%) of anaphylaxis and should be administered by healthcare providers trained to recognize and treat anaphylaxis 1
  • Patients should be observed for 2 hours after each of the first 3 injections and 30 minutes for subsequent injections 1, 2
  • The patient should have access to an epinephrine autoinjector and be trained in its use 2

Treatment Algorithm

  • Omalizumab therapy should be initiated with 300mg subcutaneously every 4 weeks, administered in a healthcare setting with anaphylaxis preparedness 1
