Radial Head Fracture Management

Initial Assessment and Classification

  • The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends obtaining true lateral radiographs to assess alignment and rule out associated injuries 1, 2, 3

Treatment Algorithm

  • The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons suggests that non-displaced or minimally displaced fractures should be treated conservatively with removable splint or minimal immobilization, and initiate immediate active finger motion exercises to prevent stiffness 4, 5
  • Avoid prolonged immobilization beyond 3 weeks, as extended immobilization increases stiffness risk and complications occur in approximately 14.7% of cases 4, 5

Critical Pitfalls to Avoid

  • The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons advises against immobilizing for extended periods (>3 weeks), and never allowing splints to obstruct full finger range of motion at any point during treatment 5

Post-Treatment Management

  • The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends reevaluating any patient with unremitting pain during follow-up, as this may indicate complications requiring intervention 1, 2, 3
