Resuming Dapagliflozin After Laparoscopic Surgery

General Considerations

  • For standard laparoscopic procedures, such as cholecystectomy, hernia repair, or appendectomy, which are considered low-to-moderate bleeding risk, dapagliflozin can be resumed 24-48 hours postoperatively once the patient is clinically stable and tolerating oral intake, according to Praxis Medical Insights 1, 2
  • For complex laparoscopic procedures with higher bleeding risk, consider delaying resumption to 48-72 hours postoperatively to ensure complete hemostasis, particularly for procedures involving highly vascular organs or extensive dissection, as recommended by Praxis Medical Insights 1, 2

Special Considerations for Bowel Surgery

  • After laparoscopic bowel surgery, wait until bowel function returns, such as passing flatus or tolerating diet without distension, before resuming dapagliflozin, as postoperative ileus can impair drug absorption, based on guidelines from Blood 3, 4
