Praziquantel Administration Guidelines

Dosage and Administration

  • The standard dosing regimen for schistosomiasis is 40 mg/kg as a single dose with food, as recommended by the Journal of Infection guidelines 1
  • For intestinal tapeworms (T. saginata), a single dose of 10 mg/kg with food is recommended, according to the Journal of Infection guidelines, although this fact is also mentioned in Praxis Medical Insights, the Journal of Infection is preferred 2
  • The liver flukes treatment regimen consists of 25 mg/kg three times daily for 2-3 consecutive days, with each dose taken with food, as per the Journal of Infection guidelines 1

Drug Interactions

  • Concurrent administration of dexamethasone should be avoided, as it reduces praziquantel levels through increased hepatic metabolism, according to the Journal of Infection guidelines 1
  • If corticosteroids are necessary, prednisolone is preferred over dexamethasone to minimize drug-drug interactions, as recommended by the Journal of Infection guidelines 1
