Treatment of Hypercalcemia with Low PTH Level

Diagnostic Evaluation and Management

  • Review all medications, particularly calcium or vitamin D supplements, that may contribute to hypercalcemia, as recommended by the guideline society, to identify potential causes of hypercalcemia 1
  • Monitor serum calcium levels every 12-24 hours during acute management, and after initial stabilization, check calcium and phosphorus monthly for the first 3 months, then every 3 months, as suggested by the guideline society 1
  • If hypercalcemia persists despite treatment, consider dialysis with low calcium dialysate (1.5-2.0 mEq/L) for severe cases, according to the American Journal of Kidney Diseases 2
