Mupirocin Ointment Use in Pediatric Populations

Clinical Considerations

  • Long-term application of topical antibiotics, including mupirocin, is not recommended due to increased risk of bacterial resistance and skin sensitization 1
  • The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends considering alternative treatments, such as oral antibiotics, for widespread infections or those with signs of systemic involvement, as stated by the Infectious Diseases Society of America 2
  • The American Academy of Pediatrics also recommends incision and drainage along with appropriate systemic antibiotics based on culture results for skin abscesses, as per the guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics 3

Monitoring and Follow-up

  • Healthcare providers should watch for signs of secondary bacterial infection or worsening of the condition, and consider discontinuing mupirocin treatment if necessary, as recommended by the Journal of Microbiology, Immunology and Infection 1
