Diet and Lifestyle Recommendations for Supporting Bone Density

Key Nutritional Components for Bone Health

  • The American College of Rheumatology recommends a daily calcium intake of 1,000-1,200 mg/day for adults, with calcium from food sources preferred over supplements 1, 3
  • Daily intake of 600-800 IU of vitamin D is recommended for adults, with serum 25(OH)D levels maintained above 20 ng/ml (50 nmol/L) 1, 3, 4
  • Vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption in the intestines, and sources include sunlight exposure, fatty fish, fortified foods, and supplements 3

Lifestyle Modifications for Bone Health

  • Regular weight-bearing and resistance training exercises are recommended, along with maintaining weight in the recommended range and completely abstaining from smoking 1, 5
  • Limiting alcohol intake to 1-2 alcoholic beverages per day is also recommended 1, 5

Special Considerations

  • Patients on glucocorticoid therapy require vigilant calcium and vitamin D supplementation, and those with inflammatory bowel disease should be monitored for vitamin D status and receive supplementation as needed 1, 2, 6, 7, 8

Monitoring

  • Periodic monitoring of vitamin D levels and bone mineral density may be appropriate for those at risk of bone density loss, with vitamin D status checked annually in high-risk individuals 2, 4, 5
